A lovely range of wool in available in 32 dyed and 5 natural shades. Spun on traditional machinery at New Lanark Mill a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 12 shades are spun using a mixture of 90% with 10% silk giving a slightly softer hand. The remaining shades are spun using 100% wool but some shades are made using more than one colour giving a soft heathery look. New Lanark spin and process this wool for the hand knitting market so if you buy it from them or other stockists it will have been washed and balled. Please note: Our stock is on cones and has not been washed; the yarn still contains the oil used in the spinning process. Weavers are very familiar with wet finishing their cloth. The yarn blooms and softens after wet finishing and makes lovely cloth suitable for blankets and cushions as well as cloth for clothing. The degree of fulling and finishing is controlled by the weaver depending on the planned use of the finished cloth. The mill wind the yarn onto cones for us using traditional machinery. This means that the weights between cones vary. To comply with regulations we are pricing and selling this yarn based on 200g of yarn being supplied; your cone may have more than 200g of yarn on it but it will not have less. See the further information tab for suggestions on sett as well as details of both metric and imperial lengths that will help you assess yarn requirements for your project.
